Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi, offers PM Modi assurances on the "safety and security of Hindus."

On August 16, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a call from Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of Bangladesh's interim government. PM Modi shared this update on his X account.

"Received a telephone call from Professor Muhammad Yunus. Exchanged views on the current situation. Reiterated India's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, and progressive Bangladesh. He assured the protection, safety, and security of Hindus and all minorities in Bangladesh," Modi posted on X.

According to an official statement, during the call, PM Modi emphasized India's commitment to supporting Bangladesh through various development initiatives. He also highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all minority communities in Bangladesh. Yunus assured that the interim government would safeguard the rights and security of these communities.

The leaders also discussed enhancing bilateral relations in line with their national priorities, the statement noted.

This conversation occurred a day after Modi addressed concerns over the condition of minorities in Bangladesh during his Independence Day speech.

Modi's comments come amidst increasing tensions due to widespread attacks on Bangladesh's minority Hindu community following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, after weeks of violent unrest. Hasina resigned and sought refuge in India.

"As a neighboring country, I understand the concern regarding the situation in Bangladesh. I hope that the situation will normalize soon," Modi said at Red Fort.

"The safety and security of Hindus and minorities there is a concern for 140 crore Indians. India always hopes that its neighboring country progresses peacefully and prosperously," he added.

Recently, Yunus visited the Dhakeshwari temple in Dhaka, reaching out to the Hindu community in Bangladesh and promising action against those who attacked religious minorities.

Sheikh Hasina, aged 76, resigned after 15 years as Prime Minister following massive protests. These initially started as a movement against a job-quota scheme and later evolved into a demand for her removal from power. The quota system was controversial as it reserved 30 percent of civil service jobs for families of veterans of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
