Virat Kohli and Joe Root stats are used by Michael Vaughan to mock India once more, but fans respond in kind.

Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan has once again caused a stir on social media by attempting to provoke Indian cricket fans. This time, Vaughan used a comparison between the Test records of Virat Kohli, the renowned Indian batsman, and Joe Root, the accomplished English cricketer. Vaughan's tweet was posted following Root's outstanding performance in the ongoing second Test match against Sri Lanka, where Root scored his 33rd Test century.

Virat Kohli and Joe Root stats are used by Michael Vaughan to mock India once more, but fans respond in kind.

Michael Vaughan is known for his provocative remarks on social media, and he did not miss the chance to take a jab at Virat Kohli, one of India's most prominent cricket stars. By sharing a statistical comparison of the Test records between Root and Kohli, Vaughan underscored Root's greater number of Test centuries. This was seen by many as a subtle suggestion that Root has outperformed Kohli in the longer format of the game.

The tweet quickly gained traction, going viral and prompting a wave of reactions from cricket enthusiasts around the world. Indian cricket fans, however, were quick to respond. They defended Kohli by emphasizing that his contributions to the game extend far beyond the sheer number of centuries. Many highlighted Kohli's consistent performances across all formats of the game and his pivotal role in elevating India's status as a cricketing powerhouse.

Regarding the second Test match itself, England managed to post a total of 427 runs, thanks in large part to the centuries scored by Joe Root and Gus Atkinson. England's innings lasted for one and a half days before Sri Lanka managed to bowl them out. Asitha Fernando was the standout bowler for Sri Lanka, taking a five-wicket haul, while Milan Rathnayake and Lahiru Kumara each claimed two wickets.

After suffering a defeat by five wickets in the first Test in Manchester the previous week, Sri Lanka made two changes to their squad for the second match. They included batter Pathum Nissanka and pace bowler Lahiru Kumara, replacing Kusal Mendis and Vishwa Fernando.

England made a single change to their lineup, with Olly Stone coming in for fellow fast bowler Mark Wood, who was sidelined due to a thigh injury. Ollie Pope, stepping in as captain for the injured Ben Stokes, mentioned that he would have opted to bat first if he had won the toss. Notably, Sri Lanka also won the toss in the first Test in Manchester.

The line-ups for the second Test match were as follows:

England: Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Ollie Pope (captain), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith, Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Matthew Potts, Olly Stone, Shoaib Bashir.

Sri Lanka: Dimuth Karunaratne, Nishan Madushka, Pathum Nissanka, Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Dhananjaya de Silva (captain), Kamindu Mendis, Milan Rathnayake, Prabath Jayasuriya, Asitha Fernando, Lahiru Kumara.

Big bets on AI and green energy from Reliance Industries, but no indication on when Jio and the retail company will go public

Big bets on AI and green energy from Reliance Industries, but no indication on when Jio and the retail company will go public

Mukesh Ambani emphasized that the Reliance Group is on track to more than double its size by the end of this decade. He identified key sectors such as Oil-to-Chemicals (O2C), Retail, Jio (its digital services arm), Media, and Green Energy and Fuels as the primary drivers of future growth.

The 47th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), held since its Initial Public Offering (IPO), was perhaps the most anticipated event of the week. The market was eagerly awaiting announcements regarding the IPO timelines for Reliance Jio and the retail business. However, during his hour-long speech, RIL’s Chairman and Managing Director, Mukesh Ambani, did not address these IPO timelines. Instead, he focused on the growth trajectory, stating that he expects both Jio and Retail to double their revenues over the next three to four years.

Regarding the revenue outlook, Ambani stated, "Jio is poised to be a cornerstone of India‘s digital future." He projected that both Jio and the Retail business would double their revenues and EBITDA within the next three to four years. He also highlighted the significant growth potential in the media sector.

The high expectations surrounding the IPO timelines for Reliance Retail and Jio stemmed from a declaration made at the 2019 AGM, which stated that these businesses would be listed within five years.

Despite the absence of an IPO update, Mukesh Ambani outlined the company's growth strategy, emphasizing the "five growth engines"—O2C, Retail, Jio, Media, and Green Energy and Fuels. He noted that Reliance is uniquely positioned to expand into new businesses adjacent to these core sectors. He highlighted that three of these growth engines already have a valuation of over $100 billion each and are expected to grow even faster in the future.

On rewarding investors, Ambani emphasized the company's commitment to wealth creation, mentioning that the Board is considering issuing bonus shares in a 1:1 ratio on September 5. He assured investors that Reliance would continue to operate within a prudent financial framework, allocating resources to high-return projects while maintaining a strong balance sheet.

A significant part of Ambani's address focused on Deep Tech and Artificial Intelligence (AI). He shared his vision for the future, which includes transforming Reliance from a technology implementer to a creator of cutting-edge technologies. The company plans to build large-scale AI infrastructure, including Gigawatt-scale AI-ready Data Centers in Jamnagar powered by green energy, to offer AI for all. These initiatives aim to have a transformative impact on sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, and small businesses.

Ambani also highlighted the strong performance of Reliance’s Upstream and Oil-to-Chemicals (O2C) businesses. Key factors contributing to this success include a focus on operational excellence, diversification in processing 60 grades of crude oil (including 13 new grades), chartering more vessels on a long-term basis amidst geopolitical tensions, strong domestic demand for fuels and downstream chemicals, and leveraging deep-tech and advanced manufacturing capabilities. The company is pioneering the use of AI-powered real-time optimization across its supply chain and advanced crude oil and feedstock characterization to drive increased profitability.

Ambani also reiterated Reliance’s emergence as a deep-tech and new energy entity. He stated that affordable and sustainable round-the-clock clean energy is critical for India’s accelerating growth. The company has committed Rs 75,000 crore to establish a new energy ecosystem. He revealed that construction has begun on an advanced chemistry-based battery manufacturing facility with an annual capacity of 30 GWh in Jamnagar, with production expected to start in the second half of next year. This facility will initially assemble Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for various markets and progressively integrate backward to cell manufacturing and eventually to battery chemical production. According to Ambani, this deep integration will help control quality and costs, ultimately resetting energy costs.

Will next week see Putin's arrest? Examined is the Russian President's visit to Mongolia

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit Mongolia next week, a country that is a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC has issued an arrest warrant for Putin, holding him accountable for alleged war crimes.

Will next week see Putin's arrest? Examined is the Russian President's visit to Mongolia

According to the Kremlin, as reported by AFP, Putin will travel to Mongolia on September 3, 2024, at the invitation of Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh. The visit is to participate in ceremonies commemorating the 85th anniversary of the joint Soviet and Mongolian forces' victory over Japanese militarists at the Khalkhin Gol River.

Last year, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin, accusing him of responsibility for war crimes, including the illegal deportation of children from Ukraine. ICC prosecutor Karim Khan has stated that if Putin visits any of the ICC's more than 120 member states, he could be subject to arrest.

However, Russia is not a signatory to the ICC, raising questions about the enforceability of such a warrant. India, another country not a member of the ICC, is expected to host Putin later this year for the G20 summit in New Delhi.

The specific charges against Putin involve his alleged role, along with Maria Lvova-Belova, in the unlawful deportation and transfer of children from occupied regions of Ukraine to Russia. Reports from the United Nations Commission of Inquiry, cited by the BBC, indicate that some of these children were forced to acquire Russian citizenship and placed in foster families in Russia, effectively making their return difficult. The transfers, initially described as temporary, have been complicated by numerous obstacles that prevent children and their parents from reuniting. UN investigators have identified 16,221 children forcibly taken to Russia.

The ICC has indicated that there are reasonable grounds to believe Putin bears "individual responsibility for these crimes," whether he committed them directly, jointly with others, or through intermediaries. Furthermore, the court suggests that Putin did not adequately control his civilian and military subordinates who were directly involved in these acts or allowed them to occur.

Under the arrest warrant, ICC member states are obligated to detain Putin or Lvova-Belova if they enter their territory. However, the ICC lacks its own police force or any direct means to enforce these arrests, which complicates the situation further.

Poem on rapes shared by Pakistani blogger. Arrested for insulting Allah

In New Delhi, a Pakistani blogger was recently charged with blasphemy and jailed for sharing a poem expressing solidarity. Asma Batool, a blogger from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, shared a poem by Salman Haider on social media. The poem highlighted the harassment faced by women in South Asian countries in the wake of the Kolkata rape case. The poem Batool shared on Facebook included a powerful line: "Khuda, Bhagwan or Ishwar, sab maujood they, jab rape hua" (All the gods were present when I was being violated). She also posted another poem on Instagram with the caption, “Your country is the same as mine.”

Poem on rapes shared by Pakistani blogger. Arrested for insulting Allah

Following this, Batool was arrested on blasphemy charges after religious clerics filed a First Information Report (FIR) against her, accusing her of insulting Allah. The FIR was filed on August 25 by Maulana Tahir Bashir, the president of Ahlus Sunnat Wal Jamaat District in Poonch. Batool’s family, in response, filed a complaint with the local police, stating that a mob had attacked their home, threatened to kill them, and attempted to set their house on fire, accusing them of abandoning their faith. Videos circulating on social media also show a mob, led by local clerics, demanding Batool’s family disown her or face social ostracism.

This incident has sparked outrage among activists nationwide, who are now calling for her immediate release and the removal of what they claim are fabricated charges.

Journalist Sabahat Zakariya commented on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Asma Batool…has been arrested for blasphemy charges for sharing a poem on her social media. Aap maane ya na maaney, this is Pakistan” (whether you agree or not, this is Pakistan). Zakariya further argued that the current situation in Pakistan is a result of stoking communal sentiments for secessionism rather than promoting dialogue within a diverse society.

Batool has been a vocal critic of the oppression of minorities in Pakistan on social media, and her YouTube channel features videos of her celebrating Holi and discussing the people of Kashmir.

Social media users are both shocked and curious about the situation. One user on X expressed frustration, writing, “Can’t wait for them to discover Iqbal (Allama Iqbal) and how ‘blasphemous’ he gets. This is disgusting, and I seriously can’t begin to see how we can ever reverse it.”

Human rights activist Gulalai Ismail also condemned Batool’s arrest, stating, “Blasphemy law is the new sedition law; a tool used by the civil-military establishment to punish dissent.”

Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, which prohibit derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad, have been a source of significant controversy. These laws can lead to severe penalties, including the death penalty. Since 1947, at least 89 people have been extrajudicially killed over blasphemy accusations, including high-profile figures such as Governor Salman Taseer and Minister Shahbaz Bhatti.

As of early 2021, approximately 80 individuals were imprisoned on blasphemy charges in Pakistan, many of whom face life sentences or even the death penalty.

Human Rights Watch highlighted the growing use of blasphemy laws to target individuals for comments made on social media, describing this trend as a "dangerous escalation." In its 2024 report on blasphemy cases in Pakistan, the organization expressed concern over the increasing suppression of free speech and the targeting of religious minorities.

In January 2023, Pakistan’s National Assembly passed the Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill, which increased the penalty for disrespecting the Prophet Muhammad’s family from three years to ten years in prison, along with a fine of 1 million Pakistani rupees. This legislative change has raised fears of worsening human rights abuses and the further persecution of religious minorities in Pakistan.

"The catch made by Suryakumar Yadav would have been awarded not out if...: The pivotal catch controversy from SKY's T20 World Cup final gets reignited by Tabraiz Shamsi.

South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi recently shared his thoughts on the outcome of the T20 World Cup 2024 final, suggesting that the result might have been different if Suryakumar Yadav's catch had been reviewed more closely. In response to a viral video, Shamsi hinted that a detailed examination of the catch could have led to it being overturned. The final match, played at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, was a memorable showdown between India and South Africa. India ultimately clinched victory in a nail-biting finish, pulling off a win from the jaws of defeat. A pivotal moment in the final over was when Suryakumar Yadav took a spectacular catch near the boundary to dismiss David Miller.

"The catch made by Suryakumar Yadav would have been awarded not out if...: The pivotal catch controversy from SKY's T20 World Cup final gets reignited by Tabraiz Shamsi.

South Africa needed 16 runs to win in the last over. Hardik Pandya bowled a full toss on the first ball, which David Miller struck with force. The ball seemed destined to clear the boundary for a six, but Suryakumar Yadav made an extraordinary play. Demonstrating remarkable skill and awareness, Yadav leaped high and managed to grab the ball just inches inside the boundary ropes. He then threw the ball back into play, before stepping out, to complete the catch, effectively dismissing Miller and securing India's triumph in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Following India's dramatic victory, Suryakumar Yadav's crucial catch was widely celebrated, earning him praise for his quick thinking and athleticism. However, the legality of the catch was questioned by some, who speculated that Yadav may have inadvertently touched the boundary rope while completing the catch, which would have resulted in a six for South Africa and potentially changed the outcome of the game.

Two months after the final, Tabraiz Shamsi made a light-hearted remark about the catch. Commenting on a humorous video where players were seen using ropes to measure the boundary to check the validity of a catch, Shamsi suggested that if the International Cricket Council (ICC) had used this method during the final, David Miller might not have been given out. "If they used this method to check the catch in the World Cup final maybe it would have been given not out," Shamsi wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

After his comment sparked some reactions, Shamsi clarified his intentions, stressing that his remark was meant to be taken as a joke and not a serious criticism of the decision. He humorously added, "In case some people don't understand that it's meant to be a joke and no one is crying... let me explain it to you like a 4-year-old child. It's A Joke."

A record-holding Indian pacer who made his T20I debut with the best bowling figures announces his retirement.

Barinder Sran, a left-arm fast bowler who represented India in six One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and two Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) in 2016, has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Throughout his international career, Sran managed to take a total of 13 wickets while playing in these two white-ball formats for India.

A record-holding Indian pacer who made his T20I debut with the best bowling figures announces his retirement.

Reflecting on his retirement, Sran expressed his gratitude for his cricketing journey. "As I officially hang up my cricket boots, I look back at my journey with a heart full of gratitude. Since switching from boxing to cricket in 2009, the sport has blessed me with countless incredible experiences. Fast bowling quickly became my calling and opened up opportunities to play for several esteemed IPL franchises, which eventually led to the pinnacle of my career—representing India in 2016," he shared.

He acknowledged that while his international career was relatively short, the experiences and memories he gained would always hold a special place in his heart. He also expressed deep appreciation for the coaches and management who supported him throughout his career, saying, "I am eternally grateful to the almighty for getting me the right coaches and management, who have supported me throughout my journey." As he looks ahead to the future, Sran remains thankful for all that cricket has given him and encourages others to dream big, quoting, "Just like the sky, dreams have no limits, so keep dreaming." These sentiments were shared by Sran in a heartfelt post on his Instagram account.

During his IPL career, Sran played for several teams, including the Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians—where he was part of the winning squad in the 2019 season—and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Over 24 IPL matches, he claimed 18 wickets, maintaining an economy rate of 9.40. Interestingly, before pursuing cricket, Sran was initially a boxer at the Bhiwani Boxing Club, known for producing notable talents like Vijender Singh, the 2008 Beijing Olympics bronze medallist.

Sran's journey into cricket began somewhat unexpectedly when an advertisement by Punjab Kings invited young talent for trials. His skills as a fast bowler earned him recognition, leading to a win in the India Under-19 segment of the Gatorade Speedster competition. This victory provided him with the opportunity to train at the ICC Academy in Dubai, where he honed his skills. Overcoming injuries and challenges, Sran progressed through the ranks, playing domestic cricket for Punjab and later Chandigarh, participating in the IPL, and ultimately achieving the honor of playing for the Indian national team.

Mamata Banerjee has been accused of lying to PM Modi over the "if you burn" threat.

A lawyer has lodged a formal complaint with the Delhi Police against the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, over remarks she made on Wednesday, claiming they were provocative and could incite unrest.

Mamata Banerjee has been accused of lying to PM Modi over the "if you burn" threat.

The complaint, submitted by Vineet Jindal, a practicing lawyer at the Supreme Court, focuses on a statement Banerjee delivered during a Trinamool Chhatra Parishad event. According to the complaint, Banerjee stated, "Remember, if Bengal burns, then Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi will also burn."

Jindal argued that Banerjee's words were inflammatory and had the potential to incite regional hatred and enmity, posing a threat to national harmony and public order. He emphasized that as a chief minister, Banerjee’s statements hold considerable influence, making such remarks particularly perilous.

"Considering the instigating and provocative nature of her statement, which seems intended to create discord and foster hatred and enmity among the people of India, especially since she mentioned Delhi as one of the states that would be affected, I, being a resident of Delhi, respectfully request that an FIR be registered under Sections 152, 192, 196, and 353 of the BNS against Mamata Banerjee. These are cognizable and serious offences," Jindal stated in his complaint.

Banerjee's Controversial Remarks

On Wednesday, Mamata Banerjee condemned the BJP's 12-hour 'Bengal Bandh,' calling it an attempt to "defame" the state of Bengal. She also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using his party to create instability in the region.

She remarked, “Some people think this (agitation) is similar to the protests in Bangladesh. I love Bangladesh, they speak like us (Bengal). Our culture is also the same. However, Bangladesh is a different country,” referring to the student-led uprising in Bangladesh that led to the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Banerjee added, “Modi babu, you are trying to create unrest in Bengal through your people. But remember, if you burn Bengal, Assam, the North-East, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi will also burn.”

The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, criticized Banerjee’s comments, accusing her of trying to spread unrest and divisive politics across India.

“Didi, how dare you threaten Assam?” Sarma posted on X. “Don't show us red eyes. Don't try to set India on fire with your politics of failure. It does not suit you to speak divisive language,” he added.

Meanwhile, the BJP state president and Union Minister of State, Sukanta Majumdar, wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, condemning Banerjee’s remarks as a “blatant endorsement of revenge politics from the highest office in the state.” Majumdar accused Banerjee of making anti-national statements by suggesting that unrest in Bengal could lead to chaos in other states.

"It is inconceivable and unprecedented for a chief minister, who is constitutionally obligated to rise above partisan views, to make such intimidating statements that threaten democracy," Majumdar said to reporters.

"Nvidia’s Earnings Will Evaluate the S&P 500’s $4 Trillion Rebound"

The upcoming quarterly earnings announcement from Nvidia (NVDA), often hailed as an AI frontrunner, is set to captivate global financial markets. The company's second-quarter fiscal year 2025 financial results are scheduled for release on August 28, 2024, at 2:00 PM PT. With the earnings report being issued after market hours on Wednesday, it could prove to be a pivotal moment for the U.S. financial landscape.

Equity investors are looking forward to Nvidia, the giant of AI, releasing its earnings report today.

Nvidia's current stock price is approximately $126, reflecting an impressive return of over 150% for investors so far in 2024, as well as a remarkable gain over the past year. Notably, Nvidia has contributed nearly 25% of the S&P 500's 17% annual growth, making its performance a focal point for market observers eager to see if the company can sustain its extraordinary trajectory.

According to Nigel Green, CEO and Founder of deVere Group, one of the world's leading independent financial advisory and asset management firms, Nvidia is expected to surpass its previous earnings results when it reports on Wednesday. Green's optimistic forecast characterizes this upcoming earnings release as potentially the "single most important earnings report of the year."

In addition, today's release of the FOMC minutes and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium on Friday are anticipated to further influence market dynamics.

Nvidia's stock has surged by 150% just this year and by an astonishing 3,000% over the past five years, marking an exceptional growth trajectory. Sheraz Mian, Research Director at Zacks Research, emphasizes Nvidia's prominent role in the AI sector, attributing its consistent high-quality quarterly results to its advanced chips designed for complex computations

However, the earnings season has been challenging for tech giants, with companies facing repercussions if their performance does not align with high valuations and substantial AI investments. John Blank, Chief Equity Strategist at Zacks Research, notes that Nvidia's remarkable multi-year performance and the current AI enthusiasm are drawing comparisons to the dot-com bubble of over two decades ago. The recent negative market reactions to disappointing results from major companies like Alphabet (GOOG) and Tesla (TSLA) suggest that investors may be particularly unforgiving, given the elevated valuations in the tech sector.

Despite these concerns, Nigel Green believes Nvidia's best days may still lie ahead. He asserts that Nvidia has firmly established itself as the leader in the AI chip market, a sector poised to revolutionize industries worldwide. In an era increasingly driven by AI technologies, Nvidia is positioned far ahead of its competitors.

"States are also being cautious about reducing GST rates: Finance Minister Sitharaman"

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated on Tuesday that states are also cautious about proceeding with reductions in tax rates. She clarified that her intention was not to criticize them, explaining that states are keen to generate revenue without imposing a heavy burden on the public. “When state officials take their positions, they are aware that their responsibility is not to appease anyone but to safeguard revenue,” she mentioned to reporters.

"States are also being cautious about reducing GST rates: Finance Minister Sitharaman"

These remarks were made in the context of ongoing discussions about revising the rates on goods and services under the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Sitharaman suggested that any changes to these rates would take some time to implement. The GST Council is expected to begin discussions on these potential changes during its meeting scheduled for September 9.

In recent months, the central government has faced criticism over the high GST rates. However, Sitharaman defended the current rates by pointing out that they are lower for nearly all goods and services compared to the rates in July 2017, when the GST was first introduced. This introduction replaced multiple other taxes and cesses.

She also addressed misinformation circulating on social media, stating, “There is a lot of vicious, false campaigning on social media. I won’t delve into that... the entire country is benefiting from GST.” She elaborated that aside from the adjusted rates, the elimination of border checks has resulted in smoother and faster movement of goods.

Additionally, Sitharaman noted that the revenue-neutral rate has now dropped below 11.6%, lower than the 15.3% suggested by an expert panel before GST was launched in 2017. This is also below the level estimated in 2019.

The group of ministers on rate rationalization, led by Bihar's Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, has recommended maintaining the current four GST slabs—5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%—while exploring adjustments to other rates.

Sitharaman also emphasized that, contrary to popular belief, the discussions between state finance ministers and the central government are conducted in a cordial manner, and decisions are made following thorough deliberations. She mentioned that the extension of the compensation cess on luxury and sin goods is another topic up for discussion. Initially, this cess was supposed to end in 2022, but to help states meet their financial requirements, the GST Council agreed to extend it until March 2026 to cover their borrowings. Government officials anticipate that the borrowings, totaling 2.7 lakh crore, will be repaid by November 2025.

The five-point plan for India's financial future presented by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das at GFF 2024

The five-point plan for India's financial future presented by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das at GFF 2024

At the Global Fintech Festival (GFF) 2024 held in Mumbai, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Shaktikanta Das, delivered a powerful speech that highlighted India's remarkable transformation into a rapidly expanding economic powerhouse. He attributed this impressive growth to a combination of factors, particularly the country's tech-savvy population and a dynamic, evolving fintech ecosystem. During his address, Das outlined five strategic priorities he believes are crucial for shaping the future of India's financial landscape.

1. Financial Inclusion

Governor Das began by celebrating the substantial progress India has made in the area of financial inclusion. He pointed out that the RBI’s Financial Inclusion Index, a measure of the extent of access, usage, and quality of financial services, has risen significantly from 53.9 in March 2021 to 64.2 in March 2024. This improvement has been largely driven by initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, a flagship financial inclusion program that has successfully completed a decade. Through this initiative, more than 530 million bank accounts have been opened, with a significant 66% of these accounts being in rural and semi-urban areas, and 55% of them benefiting women.

“Despite initial skepticism, Jan Dhan accounts have demonstrated significant savings accumulation,” Das remarked, emphasizing the tangible impact the scheme has had on millions of lives. Looking ahead, he stressed the need to leverage technology over the next two decades to address the financial needs of underserved regions. He highlighted the vital role fintech companies will play in bridging existing gaps and ensuring seamless access to financial services.

2. Enhancing Digital Public Infrastructure

The second priority outlined by Das focused on the enhancement of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), which he identified as a key factor in integrating advanced technologies into India's financial system. He spoke about the RBI's pilot project on the Unique Lending Interface (ULI), which is set to be launched on a larger scale soon. This initiative, along with the existing JAM (Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile) trinity and UPI, marks a new era in India’s financial journey.

“DPI has the potential to revolutionize financial services in India,” Das asserted, underscoring the transformative impact these initiatives are expected to have on the financial landscape. By streamlining access to financial products and services, DPI is anticipated to enhance financial inclusion and increase efficiency across the country.

3. Strengthening Cybersecurity

In a world that is becoming increasingly digital, cybersecurity has emerged as a critical pillar in safeguarding India’s financial ecosystem. Das emphasized the importance of real-time monitoring and strict regulatory compliance, especially in light of the recently enacted Digital Personal Data Protection Act. This new legislation empowers individuals by giving them greater control over their personal data, thereby enhancing trust in digital financial services.

“Banks and fintech firms, particularly Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs), are expected to adopt a customer-centric approach, ensuring transparency in financial products and fair lending practices,” Das stated. He also highlighted the need for continuous vigilance against cyber threats and stressed the importance of promoting cybersecurity awareness to build a secure digital economy.

4. Promoting Long-Term Sustainable Finance

Das then turned his focus to the importance of long-term sustainable finance. He highlighted the RBI’s efforts in promoting sustainability within the financial sector, such as through the issuance of sovereign green bonds and the introduction of green deposits. However, he also acknowledged the challenges associated with scaling these initiatives, noting that the green bond market still requires significant expansion.

“Technology, particularly artificial intelligence and big data, will play a transformative role in assessing environmental risks and accelerating the transition to sustainable finance,” Das explained. He emphasized the crucial role fintech companies are expected to play in driving this transition over the next two decades, positioning India as a leader in sustainable finance.

5. Reinforcing Financial Infrastructure

Finally, Das underscored the need to strengthen India’s financial infrastructure, with a specific focus on cross-border payments. He highlighted the RBI’s ongoing efforts to make UPI and RuPay truly global, emphasizing this as a key strategic priority moving forward.

“We must adopt artificial intelligence carefully and in a calibrated manner, understanding both its potential and the risks it poses,” Das cautioned. He also pointed to the Internet of Things (IoT) as the next frontier of opportunity for the financial sector, stressing the importance of innovation in reinforcing India’s financial infrastructure.

Conclusion

The Global Fintech Festival (GFF) 2024 in Mumbai provided a platform for industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators to discuss the future of fintech in India. As one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, India has witnessed a surge in fintech startups, with over 11,000 companies being founded and $6 billion in funding secured over the last three years. This growth is reflective of the country's broader economic trajectory, driven by a young, tech-savvy population eager to embrace digital financial services.

Governor Das’s address at the GFF 2024 reflected the RBI’s strategic vision for the future of India’s financial sector, emphasizing the need for innovation, inclusion, and resilience. The priorities he outlined are set against the backdrop of India’s broader economic goals, which include achieving universal financial inclusion, fostering sustainable growth, and positioning the country as a global leader in fintech.

In summary, Governor Shaktikanta Das’s comprehensive address at the GFF 2024 provided a clear roadmap for the future of India’s financial sector. By focusing on financial inclusion, enhancing Digital Public Infrastructure, strengthening cybersecurity, promoting sustainable finance, and reinforcing financial infrastructure, Das highlighted the essential components of a robust and resilient financial system. His vision for the future reflects a strong commitment to leveraging technology, ensuring security, and fostering innovation to propel India forward in its journey towards becoming a global economic powerhouse.

'Shout as much as you want...I won't let Muslims take over Assam,' was Himanta's vehement reply to Congress.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a strong statement on Tuesday, declaring that he would not permit Muslims to take control of the state. During a session in the assembly, Sarma dismissed the objections raised by Congress members, asserting that he would not allow Assam to become 'Miya Bhoomi,' a term he used to refer to an area dominated by Muslims. "I will take sides, what can you do about it? I won’t let 'Miya' Muslims take over Assam," he emphasized in response to criticism from Congress members. Later, he reiterated his stance in a tweet, sharing a brief video of his speech in the assembly and stating, "Let the Congressmen shout and scream as much as they want; I will not let Assam become 'Miya Bhoomi'."

'Shout as much as you want...I won't let Muslims take over Assam,' was Himanta's vehement reply to Congress.

The Chief Minister's remarks came during a debate on adjournment motions introduced by opposition parties, including Congress, AIUDF, CPI(M), and an Independent legislator, Akhil Gogoi, to discuss the law and order situation in Assam, particularly in the context of the recent rape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon. Addressing these motions, Sarma argued that the crime rate had not increased when considering the overall population growth.

In response to accusations from the opposition of being biased, Sarma asserted, "I will take sides. What can you do about it?" He further questioned, "Why should people from Lower Assam move to Upper Assam? Is it so that 'Miya' Muslims can take over Assam? We will not let this happen," reinforcing his position against what he perceives as a demographic shift in the state.

Sarma has previously expressed concerns about the growing Muslim population in Assam. In July, he warned that if current trends continued, Assam could become a Muslim-majority state by 2041. He pointed out that the Muslim population in Assam was increasing at a rate of 30% every decade. "In 2011, the Muslim population was 1.4 crore. The Hindu population is growing at 16%. Every ten years, the Muslim population, compared to Hindus, grows by 16%. From 2011 to 2021, it increased by 22 lakh. From 2021 to 2031, it will increase by another 22 lakh. And from 2031 to 2041, it will rise by yet another 22 lakh. This is statistically possible," he stated.

He further elaborated, "The increase in the Muslim population in Assam is a statistical fact. The rate of increase for Muslims is significantly higher than that for Hindus, and at this rate, they will become the majority by 2041." After facing criticism from Congress, Sarma referred to an analysis by Mrinal Talukdar, a well-known Assamese journalist, which suggested that Assam could transition to a Muslim-majority state by 2051. "Ignoring these demographic changes won't change the reality. Congress's approach to minority appeasement is dangerously shortsighted," he concluded.

In a run chase, captain Rinku Singh rallies Meerut Mavericks from 54 for 4, then becomes the finisher once more with a 35-ball 48 following the Duleep Trophy rejection.

Middle-order batter Rinku Singh played a crucial role for the Meerut Mavericks in their successful run chase against the Kanpur Superstars in the ongoing Uttar Pradesh T20 League. Leading from the front, Rinku formed a strong partnership with wicketkeeper-batter Uvaish Ahmed, combining for an unbeaten 100-run stand for the fifth wicket. Chasing a target of 153 runs, the pair's efforts helped Meerut Mavericks secure a comfortable victory by six wickets, with 14 balls remaining.

In a run chase, captain Rinku Singh rallies Meerut Mavericks from 54 for 4, then becomes the finisher once more with a 35-ball 48 following the Duleep Trophy rejection.

Earlier in the match, leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari was the standout performer for Meerut Mavericks, taking five wickets while conceding only 26 runs in his four-over spell. His impressive bowling dismantled the Kanpur Superstars' middle order. Despite some resistance, Kanpur Superstars managed to post a total of 152/8, with Adarsh Singh playing an aggressive role. However, their key player Shoaib Siddiqui fell cheaply, and Shaurya Singh was dismissed after a promising start. Ansari’s first significant breakthrough came when he dismissed a well-set Ansari, who scored 73 runs off 48 balls, including six fours and three sixes.

The Meerut Mavericks' bowling attack continued to dominate with Mohsin Khan making an early breakthrough, dismissing Akshay Dubey for a two-ball duck. Swastik Chikara and Madhav Kaushik utilized the powerplay effectively, scoring 23 off 13 balls and 25 off 19 balls respectively. However, their progress was halted when Rishabh Rajput took two crucial wickets in quick succession. Aquib Khan then added to Kanpur’s woes by dismissing Rituraj Sharma in the seventh over.

At 54/4, Meerut Mavericks were in a precarious position when Rinku Singh and Uvaish Ahmed came to the crease. Displaying great composure and skill, the pair guided their team towards the target. Uvaish scored 48 runs off 34 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes, while Rinku matched his teammate’s score with 48 runs off 35 deliveries, studded with four fours and one six.

With this win, their second of the tournament, Meerut Mavericks climbed to the top of the points table. In their opening match, they had defeated Kashi Rudras by seven wickets, successfully chasing down a target of 101 runs in just nine overs, with Rinku finishing the chase with a six.

However, despite his recent performances, Rinku Singh was a surprising omission from the Duleep Trophy 2024 squads. The 26-year-old has an impressive First-Class cricket average of 54.70, with 3,173 runs in 69 innings, including seven centuries and 20 half-centuries. Following this exclusion from the domestic tournament, Rinku is set to feature in the T20I series against Bangladesh in October.

Hockey Legend PR Sreejesh and Family Disappointed When Olympian Isn't Told of Postponed Felicitation Ceremony by Kerala Govt

What was meant to be a celebratory day for Kerala has quickly turned into a day best forgotten. Recent reports reveal that the felicitation ceremony for PR Sreejesh, the former Indian hockey goalkeeper, was postponed yet again. Shockingly, Sreejesh was not informed of the delay, leading to widespread surprise and disappointment.

Hockey Legend PR Sreejesh and Family Disappointed When Olympian Isn't Told of Postponed Felicitation Ceremony by Kerala Govt

The Kerala government had previously announced a cash award of Rs. 2 crore for Sreejesh, recognizing his pivotal role in securing a bronze medal for India at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. This marked the second consecutive bronze for the national hockey team at the Olympics, with Sreejesh playing a crucial role in both successes. The decision to honor him with the reward was made in a meeting chaired by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, celebrating Sreejesh’s remarkable performance during what would be his final Olympic campaign.

The award ceremony was initially scheduled for August 24, then rescheduled to August 26, before being postponed indefinitely. Unfortunately, Sreejesh and his family, who had traveled from Kannur to Thiruvananthapuram for the event, only learned of the postponement upon their arrival in the capital. The failure of officials to inform Sreejesh about the change has sparked criticism and confusion.

Despite the unexpected turn of events, Sreejesh has chosen not to comment publicly on the situation. According to reports from Mathrubhumi, he stated, "I am not going to respond to this situation right now."

Sreejesh's contributions to Indian hockey are monumental. He played a vital role in the team's consecutive bronze medals at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympics, with his final Olympic appearance ending on a high note. His outstanding performance helped secure a 2-1 comeback victory against Spain, earning India a place on the podium. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Hockey India has retired his jersey number, a rare honor. Additionally, Sreejesh has been appointed as the coach of the Indian national junior hockey team, a testament to his enduring legacy and nearly two decades of dedication to the Men in Blue.

Bangladesh wants strong ties with the US, China, and Pakistan, according to the head of Jamaat-e-Islami, who believes New Delhi shouldn't meddle.

Shafiqur Rahman, the leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, a party known for its anti-India rhetoric and pro-Pakistan stance, has stated that his party is interested in establishing stable relations with India. However, he emphasized that India should refrain from interfering in Bangladesh's domestic matters. Rahman highlighted that while Jamaat-e-Islami supports strengthening ties between New Delhi and Dhaka, it also advocates for Bangladesh to maintain strong and balanced relations with other major countries, such as the United States, China, and Pakistan. He suggested that Bangladesh should move forward without being burdened by historical conflicts.

Bangladesh wants strong ties with the US, China, and Pakistan, according to the head of Jamaat-e-Islami, who believes New Delhi shouldn't meddle.

Jamaat-e-Islami has a controversial history, having supported Pakistan during Bangladesh's liberation war and called for the implementation of Sharia law in Bangladesh. The Supreme Court of Bangladesh previously barred the party from contesting in general elections due to its extremist views, and the government led by Sheikh Hasina also banned the party for similar reasons. However, the interim government under Muhammad Yunus recently lifted this ban, stating there was "no specific evidence" linking Jamaat, its student wing Shibir, or its affiliated organizations to terrorist activities.

In an interview with PTI, Rahman argued that the perception of Jamaat-e-Islami as anti-India is incorrect. He stated that the party is not against any country and is primarily focused on protecting Bangladesh's interests. Rahman criticized former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for leaving Bangladesh and seeking refuge in India following political unrest, suggesting she should return to face the legal processes in her own country. He also criticized India for actions that, according to him, were perceived negatively by the Bangladeshi public, such as a senior Indian diplomat's involvement in dictating the participation in the 2014 Bangladeshi elections. Rahman expressed hope that India would eventually reconsider its foreign policy towards Bangladesh to avoid interference in internal matters.

Rahman emphasized that Jamaat-e-Islami desires a friendly relationship with India and recognizes its own responsibility in fostering positive bilateral ties. He distinguished between cooperation, which he views positively, and interference, which he views negatively, stressing that good relations should be based on mutual respect and non-interference. He noted that despite past interactions with the Indian government, these connections had lessened during the Awami League's 16-year rule. Nonetheless, Rahman expressed optimism about the possibility of renewing effective relations with India.

Addressing Jamaat-e-Islami's stance on relations with Pakistan, Rahman stated that the party seeks amicable relations with Islamabad, as well as a balanced relationship with all regional neighbors, including India, Pakistan, Nepal, Myanmar, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka. He argued that maintaining this balance is essential for regional stability. He also mentioned the importance of maintaining balanced and stable relationships with global powers like the United States and China in today's interconnected world.

Regarding the upcoming elections in Bangladesh, Rahman affirmed that Jamaat-e-Islami plans to participate whenever they are held. He suggested that while the interim government should have some time, it should not prolong its tenure indefinitely. Rahman mentioned that the party would clarify its stance on the timing of fresh elections at an appropriate time but confirmed their readiness to contest the elections when scheduled.

In support of the Kolkata rape victim, Arijit Singh releases a moving song.

Bollywood singer Arijit Singh has released a poignant protest song in response to the shocking rape and murder case in Kolkata. The song, titled "Aar Kobe," features powerful lyrics written by Srijit, reflecting the widespread protests and unrest currently sweeping across the country. The song's lyrics are deeply moving, capturing the emotional intensity of the situation.

In support of the Kolkata rape victim, Arijit Singh releases a moving song.

Reports indicate that Arijit Singh composed and recorded the song in his studio located in Jiaganj, Murshidabad. During a live stream, which was widely shared by fan pages, Singh expressed his concerns about the ongoing protests. He emphasized that merely taking to the streets would not be sufficient and cautioned against allowing the situation to descend into chaos. "While it's important for everyone to participate, we must avoid actions that could lead to disorder. If things spiral out of control, it would be counterproductive and serve no purpose. We need to act with caution and wisdom to prevent any exploitation of the situation," Singh advised.

Earlier this month, several prominent figures in the Bengali entertainment industry had questioned Arijit Singh's silence on the matter, wondering why he had not yet spoken out.

In his live stream, Singh further expressed his personal anguish, saying, "This issue is happening in my state, my country, my home." He called for transparency and spoke about the feeling of helplessness that many, including himself, were experiencing. He admitted that while he could not physically join the protests in the streets, he felt a deep sense of powerlessness. However, he stressed the importance of not letting the voices of dissent be silenced and urged everyone to remain united. Singh emphasized the need to ensure that the purpose behind the protests is not forgotten, advocating for solidarity and a clear, focused response to the crisis.

"I apologize," Mamata Banerjee Says Regarding RG Kar Hospital Victim During Bengal Bandh

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced today that the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad Foundation Day would be dedicated to the memory of a young trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. In her statement, Banerjee expressed her profound sorrow over the tragic loss and offered her heartfelt condolences to the victim's family. She also called for swift justice for the young woman and extended her sympathies to all women across India who have endured similar inhumane acts.

"I apologize," Mamata Banerjee Says Regarding RG Kar Hospital Victim During Bengal Bandh

In a heartfelt message, Mamata Banerjee said, "I dedicate this day to our sister whose life was tragically cut short at RG Kar Hospital a few days ago. We deeply mourn her loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, and we fervently seek speedy justice for her. I also want to extend my condolences to every woman in India who has suffered such brutality."

The Chief Minister also addressed the youth, saying, "I apologize. Students and young people play a crucial social role. It is their duty to inspire society and culture, to keep them awake, and to offer the hope of a brighter future. I urge all young people today to remain committed to this cause, to stay healthy, and to work toward a brighter future."

This announcement came as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called for a 12-hour statewide strike in West Bengal, from 6 am to 6 pm, to protest the police crackdown on participants in a march to the state secretariat, Nabbana, over the Kolkata rape and murder case.

On Tuesday, the streets of Kolkata were scenes of chaos, with clashes, stone-pelting, and violence erupting as the police tried to control the aggressive protesters attempting to reach the state secretariat. The police used tear gas, water cannons, and batons to disperse the crowds. The confrontations, which lasted nearly four hours, resulted in multiple injuries on both sides, including among senior police officers and female protesters. West Bengal's Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, claimed that over 160 protesters, including 17 women, were injured in the police action and called on Governor CV Ananda Bose to "impose President's Rule" in the state.

BJP state president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar stated that the bandh was a necessary response to what he described as Mamata Banerjee's "autocratic regime." He said, "We are compelled to call for a dawn-to-dusk strike because this autocratic regime is ignoring the voices of the people and the demand for justice for the deceased doctor. Instead of providing justice, Mamata Banerjee's police are attacking the peaceful citizens of the state, who only want a safe environment for women."

Following a day of unrest, the streets of Bengal were eerily quiet on the day of the bandh, with a heavy police presence deployed across Kolkata to prevent any further violence. Drivers from the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) were seen wearing helmets for safety, as instructed by the government, due to the risk of violence during the strike.

Major airlines, including Vistara, IndiGo, and SpiceJet, issued travel advisories warning passengers about potential disruptions in transportation and traffic. They advised passengers to plan their journeys carefully, stay updated on road conditions, and monitor their flight status to avoid any inconvenience during the bandh.

Congress uses a "U-turn" counter the day after the Center introduces the Unified Pension Scheme, saying, "U in UPS stands for."

The day after the Union Cabinet approved a new Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) for Central government employees, the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, criticized the decision. He remarked that the ‘U’ in UPS represents the "U-turns" often made by the Narendra Modi-led government on various policies and issues.

Congress uses a "U-turn" counter the day after the Center introduces the Unified Pension Scheme, saying, "U in UPS stands for."

The newly approved scheme by the Union Cabinet guarantees that Central government employees will receive a pension amounting to 50 percent of their average salary over the last 12 months of service.

In a post on X, Kharge commented, "The 'U' in UPS stands for Modi Govt's U-turns! Since June 4, the power of the people has overcome the Prime Minister’s arrogance." He highlighted several policy reversals by the Modi government, such as the rollback of changes in the budget related to Long Term Capital Gain/Indexation, sending the Waqf Bill to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), withdrawing the Broadcast Bill, and reversing the Lateral Entry initiative. Kharge asserted, "We will continue to ensure accountability and protect the 140 crore Indians from this despotic government!"

What is the New Pension Scheme?

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the new pension scheme, which guarantees a minimum assured pension of Rs 10,000 per month upon retirement after at least 10 years of service. This scheme is set to benefit around 23 lakh Central government employees.

Under the new scheme, the employees’ contribution remains unchanged at 10 percent of their basic pay plus dearness allowance. The UPS will become effective from April 1, 2025, and will be available to employees who have completed 25 years of service in the government. The scheme includes several key features, such as:

- A family pension for the spouse, which is 60 percent of the employee’s pension income after their death.

- A minimum pension of Rs 10,000 per month for employees who have completed at least 10 years of service.

- Inflation indexation to adjust for rising prices of goods and services.

- An option to withdraw a lump sum amount at the time of retirement.

These new features mark a shift from the existing National Pension Scheme (NPS), which provided pensions based on the contributions made by both employees and the government. The announcement of the new scheme comes at a time when several non-BJP states have decided to return to the DA-linked Old Pension Scheme (OPS), and employee organizations in some other states are also demanding the same.

Since January 1, 2004, the NPS has been in place for all government employees, except those in the armed forces, who joined the central government after that date. The Old Pension Scheme (OPS) ensured that retired government employees received 50 percent of their last drawn salary as a monthly pension, with adjustments for any increase in dearness allowance (DA) rates.

"Polygraph test results on Roy are false."

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted a polygraph test on Sanjay Roy, the suspect arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a PG trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital. According to investigators, Roy's responses during the test, especially regarding his newly claimed "innocence," were deemed "false and unconvincing." The test was administered by two designated officers at Kolkata's Presidency Jail, and the results were made public on Sunday, as reported by Rohit Khanna.

"Polygraph test results on Roy are false."

Controversy erupted when Roy's state-appointed lawyer accused the CBI of violating National Human Rights Commission guidelines by conducting the polygraph test without notifying the defense team. "The CBI did not inform us about the timing of the test. They should have informed us so we could have been present," the defense counsel argued, suggesting procedural impropriety.

During the two-hour polygraph test, CBI sources noted that Roy appeared "unnerved and anxious" as he was questioned. Despite being confronted with forensic evidence that allegedly linked him to the crime, Roy maintained his stance of innocence, repeatedly citing various "alibis." He claimed that when he came upon the scene, the victim, a 31-year-old junior doctor, was already dead. According to Roy, fear caused him to flee the scene immediately.

The CBI, however, was skeptical of his account, given the contradictions between his statements and the forensic findings pointing to his involvement in the crime. This skepticism was further reinforced by Roy's demeanor and inconsistent answers during the polygraph test, suggesting that his assertions of innocence were not credible.
